چکیده

In survival or reliability studies, the mean residual life or life expectancy is an important characteristic of the model. Whereas the failure rate can be expressed quite simply in terms of the mean residual life and its derivative, the inverse problem—namely that of expressing the mean residual life in terms of the failure rate—typically involves an integral of a complicated expression. In this paper, we obtain simple expressions for the mean residual life in terms of the failure rate for certain classes of distributions which subsume many of the standard cases. Several results in the literature can be obtained using our approach. Additionally, we develop an expansion for the mean residual life in terms of Gaussian probability functions for a broad class of ultimately increasing failure rate distributions. Some examples are provided to illustrate the procedure. c © 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved. Influence of Residual Stress on Fatigue Life of Hot Forged and Shot Blasted Steel Components

Hot forging is a common manufacturing process for the production of large quantities of engineering components. Residual stresses are developed in forged components as a result of various aspects of the manufacturing process, including subsequent cooling, and heat treatment. Residual stresses can significantly affect the deformation and fatigue failure of materials. Hot forged EN15R steel bars ...

Limiting Behaviour of the Mean Residual Life

In survival or reliability studies, the mean residual life or life expectancy is an important characteristic of the model. Here, we study the limiting behaviour of the mean residual life, and derive an asymptotic expansion which can be used to obtain a good approximation for large values of the time variable. The asymptotic expansion is valid for a quite general class of failure rate distributi...

Generalized Ageing Classes in Terms of Laplace Transforms

Kebir (1994) (see also Shaked and Shanthikumar, 1994) has characterized likelihood ratio (LR) ordering, failure rate (FR) ordering, reversed hazard rate ordering and stochastic (ST) ordering with the help of Laplace transform. Using Laplace transform, Nanda (1995) has characterized, by means of necessary and sufficient conditions, the property that two life distributions are ordered in the s-FR...

Effect of Residual Stress on Failure of Tube-to-tubesheet Weld in Heat Exchangers

In a shell and tube heat exchanger, the failure of tube-to-tubesheet welds results in high-pressure water jet which erodes the refractory in front of the tubesheet. Finite element method was employed to simulate the welding process and post weld heat treatment (PWHT) to find the factors affecting the failure in tube-to-tubesheet weldments. Residual stresses in two different geometries of tube-t...
